The journey begins with an encounter with an authentic territory, located at the confluence of the Vienne and the Gloire. Here, the rolling landscapes, dotted with small picturesque villages, majestic castles and mysterious medieval ruins, tell a thousand-year-old story at every turn. A vehicle is essential to fully explore this rural region where each stop promises exotic walks between generous nature and remarkable built heritage.

Each stage of this journey will make you feel the essence of Charente Limousine. Whether strolling through the picturesque streets of Confolens, visiting the ancient thermal baths of Cassinomagus, admiring the Romanesque churches that emerge at the bend of the paths, or contemplating the vast manorial estates, history and culture are revealed in grandeur nature.

Confolens: Starting Point

Confolens, Petite Cité de Caractère® and Town of Art and History, is the ideal starting point for this journey. Nestled in the heart of Charente Limousine, this town has retained its medieval charm with its half-timbered houses from the 15th and 16th centuries, its old convents and its medieval bridges, such as the Pont Vieux and the Pont du Goire. Strolling through its streets is like traveling through the centuries. Historic buildings, such as the Keep and the Hall of Justice, bear witness to its development in the Middle Ages. A local peculiarity? A vibrant British community has called it home for several decades, contributing to local life with establishments such as a fish and chip shop, an American restaurant, a tea room and beautiful little shops.

Saint-Germain-de-Confolens: A Picturesque Village

Following the Vienne, the road leads to Saint-Germain-de-Confolens. Park at the entrance to the village and set off to explore on foot. Dominated by the mysterious ruins of its castle, this town offers a breathtaking view of the valley. The ruined towers of the castle evoke the power of the barons of Saint-Germain in the 15th and 16th centuries. In season, a small tavern on the banks of the Vienne is ideal for a relaxing break. Stroll through the typical village and enjoy the pretty views of the banks of the Vienne and the castle from the bridge.

The Gallic village of Coriobona: Return to the Iron Age

Next stop, the Gallic village of Coriobona, a fascinating reconstruction based on archaeological research. Here, cob houses, pottery and craft demonstrations transport you to the era of Gallic warriors. The village features an aristocratic house, farms and various pottery and blacksmith workshops. Demonstrations by artisans and warriors offer a lively and interactive immersion into the past. A perfect place for a family visit, enriching and fun.

Brigueuil and the Château de Rochebrune: Medieval Heritage

Continue to Brigueuil, a medieval fortified town perched at an altitude of 342 m. A walk allows you to discover its streets and its medieval heritage: church, city gate, dungeon, ramparts, Calvary, lantern of the dead and pyramidal fountain.

Not far from there, the Château de Rochebrune is worth the detour. Its majestic silhouette is reflected in the water of the moat. The building is made up of three wings of buildings surrounding the main courtyard, with large cylindrical towers at the corners. Founded in the 11th century to protect the borders of the principality of Chabanais, this castle is a privileged witness to medieval history. Guided tours are organized by the tourist office, and a walk to admire the castle and its many exterior buildings is definitely worth it!

Cassinomagus: Archaeological Treasure of Antiquity

The Cassinomagus Archaeological Park reveals the remains of a prosperous ancient city built in the 1st century AD. Located on the Via Agrippa between Saintes and Lyon, this group of public and religious buildings included a theater, a temple and thermal baths among the most important in Gaul. The remains of the excavations and a contextual film allow us to understand the history of this city which developed over five centuries. The thermal baths, which are among the best preserved in Europe, cover 10,000 square meters with 14 rooms and 2 levels, and are absolutely worth discovering. Allow a few hours to explore this site, rich in activities and historical discoveries. A mini farm and activities for children, such as the possibility of dressing up upon entry, make the visit fun and enriching.

Lésignac-Durand: Gourmet Detour at the Javernac Farm

Stop off at the Ferme de Javernac in Lésignac-Durand to discover the cow's cheese produced for three generations. Fresh tomato and cheese, with varied flavors, will delight lovers of local products. A tasting is essential! The short-circuit shop allows you to buy cow's tommes made with whole raw milk, plain, with cumin and fenugreek (a must-try!), as well as fresh cheeses in various flavors.

The Lakes of Haute Charente: Nature Break

Then join the Lakes of Haute Charente. Lake Mas Chaban offers a pleasant stroll around its banks, while Lake Lavaud, with its Guerlie beach, invites you to swim and relax. The trails around Mas Chaban Lake are ideal for a leisurely walk and discovery of the local fauna and flora.

Chasseneuil-sur-Bonnieure: Resistance Memorial

The Resistance Memorial in Chasseneuil-sur-Bonnieure is a moving site of memory. This impressive monument, 21 meters high, honors the 2029 resistance fighters and soldiers who fell for France after the Second World War. A visit marked by respect and reflection on our common history, facing these tombs lined up as far as the eye can see. This memory site is essential to understand the sacrifice and bravery of the resistance fighters.

Peyras: Medieval Castle

Continue towards Peyras to visit its medieval castle, built in the 11th and 13th centuries. Fans of the Middle Ages will be delighted by this immersion in the past. The castle, with its towers and walls, offers a fascinating insight into medieval architecture and lifestyles of the time.
