Day 1: Angoulême – Villebois-Lavalette

Discovery of Angoulême, the City of Comics

The journey begins in Angoulême, perched on a hill offering breathtaking views of the Charente. Known for its international comics festival, the city boasts captivating murals. A walk in the old town allows you to discover the majestic Saint-Pierre Cathedral, a masterpiece of Romanesque art from the 12th century. Don't miss the Comic Strip Museum, a must for fans of this art. In the evening, savor local specialties such as charentais cricket and charentais farci in one of the many traditional restaurants.

Exploring Villebois-Lavalette

The next day, travel through the rolling countryside towards Villebois-Lavalette, a charming Little Town of Character with its 17th century covered market and feudal castle. Enjoy a stroll through this picturesque village and soak up the peaceful atmosphere. Not far away, the Château de la Mercerie, often nicknamed the “Versailles Charentais”, is worth a detour.

Day 2: Villebois-Lavalette – Aubeterre-sur-Dronne

Stop at Gurat and its Monolith Treasures

On the way to Aubeterre-sur-Dronne, take a detour through Gurat to visit its impressive monolithic church. Along the way, stop at local producers to taste fresh produce, like goat cheese or artisanal honey, and discover picturesque farms.

Aubeterre-sur-Dronne, classified among the most beautiful villages in France, is an essential stopover. This fortified village is famous for its underground church of Saint-Jean, one of the largest monolithic churches in Europe and the tallest in France. Day 3: Aubeterre-sur-Dronne – Barbezieux-Saint-Hilaire

Visit to Chalais Castle and Romanesque Churches

Leave Aubeterre for Chalais and visit its 16th-century castle, which offers panoramic views of the valley. Continue towards the Romanesque churches of Conzac and the Protestant temple of Cressac, dating from the 16th century, towards Barbezieux-Saint-Hilaire. This region is also famous for its vineyards. Take the opportunity to visit wine estates and taste local wines.

Day 4: Barbezieux-Saint-Hilaire – Jarnac

Discovery of the Vineyards and the Saint-Étienne de Bassac Abbey

Explore Barbezieux, its castle and its vineyards before heading to Bouteville. Stop off at Angéac-Champagne to admire the Saint-Étienne de Bassac abbey, a jewel of Romanesque architecture. Then continue towards Jarnac, nestled in the Charente valley. In Jarnac, treat yourself to a river trip to discover the old salt and cognac route, admiring the wooded banks of the river.

Day 5: Jarnac – Cognac

Immersion in the World of Cognac

The last day of this road trip takes you to Cognac, world famous for its famous liqueur. Start with a visit to the Cognac Arts Museum to understand the history and manufacturing process of this iconic drink. Then, explore one of the great cognac houses, such as Hennessy or Martell, for an unforgettable tasting or visit small producers who will be happy to let you taste their cognacs.
