Immerse yourself in the heart of North Charente for a two-day road trip, where a thirst for freedom and discovery intertwine harmoniously. Between the rural landscapes of this land of livestock and cereal cultivation, the unmissable sites and the small villages full of charm, this journey promises you a bucolic setting and experiences rich in emotions. Let yourself be enchanted by the hidden treasures of this northern part of Charente, Ruffecois and the Charente Valley while following the soothing rhythm of life in the countryside.
This road trip begins in Angoulême. Head east to reach the majestic Château de La Rochefoucauld. Try to arrive at the opening and let yourself be amazed by this architectural gem, a true emblem of Charente, which will immerse you in the twists and turns of its rich past.
Nestled in the heart of a green landscape, the Château de La Rochefoucauld stands proudly with its imposing towers and its elegant appearance like an Italian Renaissance palace. Let yourself be transported by the family history of the Rochefoucaulds and wander through these many rooms. The guided tour of the library is captivating!
Continue your journey towards Saint-Amant-de-Boixe, where a majestic Benedictine abbey awaits you, nestled between the Charente river and the Boixe forest. Let yourself be moved by the spiritual atmosphere and the timeless beauty of this true treasure of Angoumois heritage.
At the end of the afternoon, stop at Montignac-Charente, a picturesque village built along the river. Walk along the quays, admire the remains of the keep and the towers which recall the ancient presence of the Château de Montignac.
Further on, you will find, a little outside the village, the Romanesque church of Lichères in the middle of the fields! Built around 1130, it will seduce you with its serenity and its unusual character, but also with its sculpted tympanum and its fantastic animals.
On the second day, continue your journey to Verteuil-sur-Charente, labeled Petite Cité de Caractère. Dominated by its imposing castle, this village offers picturesque views of the bridge and the Saint-Médard church. Stroll through the small streets that run alongside the castle and on the heights to discover the secret nooks and crannies of this enchanting place.
A few kilometers away, Nanteuil-en-Vallée welcomes you in an idyllic setting. This charming village, nestled in a valley by a meander of the Argentor, is also classified as a Small Town of Character. Stroll along the Argentor gardens, then venture into the streets with old houses. Don't miss a visit to Notre-Dame Abbey, dating from 780, and the remarkable Treasury Tower.
Very close by, the Rejallant area located along the Charente is an ideal place to cool off, ideal for swimming and picnics in the countryside!
To end your journey, take the road towards Ruffec and follow the meanders of the Charente river. Pass through small picturesque villages, such as Ligné, with its medieval Templar cemetery, and Tusson, offering a pleasant stopover.
In Tusson, open the door to the Maison de la Charente, an artisanal production house specializing in foie gras and duck fat since 1988, with a superb shop selling regional Charentais products for direct sale!
