Visit Angoulême with complete peace of mind after the holidays

September has arrived! The streets of Angoulême are free of tourists, giving you the opportunity to visit this magnificent city in complete tranquility. Start with the circuit of the ramparts and walls painted with breathtaking life on the Charente in the soft colors of autumn. On an 8km route, you discover Angoulême high up along the 4th century ramparts. Open your eyes wide, the walls are colorful with comic book paintings! Continue to Saint-Pierre d'Angoulême Cathedral, a true Romanesque architectural beauty dating from the 12th century. The interior can be visited freely and will leave you speechless as the volumes and vaulted arches are magnificent, with an organ that stands out at the back of the room.

Stroll along the banks of the Charente in autumn

At the end of summer, the gentle rays of the sun are perfect for strolling along the Charente without suffocating. This very peaceful river crosses Cognac and Angoulême, and offers the most pleasant nature outings with friends or family. On foot or by bike, it's up to you to choose what you prefer, other destinations also have marked trails to enjoy the blue water, such as the hike from Mosnac and Malvy along the Charente. With its thousands of cycle paths, the Charente is ideal for escaping through the vineyards in the colors of autumn or around the lakes, like the magnificent walk of the blue lakes of Guizengeard. Let yourself be carried away by the light breeze which cools you, you will quickly warm up!

Enjoy a good cognac at the start of the school year

Here is the essential stop if you visit Charente, whether in autumn or at any time of the year, cognac tasting. A renowned drink in the region, it is made to the west of Angoulême with various wines depending on their location. Grande champagne, petite champagne, borderies, fine bois, good bois or ordinary bois, go to Cognac in Charente to discover the specificities. Several museums can be visited between the Cognac know-how museum and the art and history museum which benefit from the “Museums of France” designation. Don't forget to visit the producers and visit the cellars, they will be delighted to provide you with information and help you taste this eau-de-vie with its many secrets.

Visit the castles of Charente in autumn

The season is perfect after summer to discover the historic buildings of Charente steeped in history. You can visit :

  • The castle of La Rochefoucauld built in the 16th century, magnificent and imposing,
  • The Cognac castle known today as the Maison de Cognac open to visits and tastings,
  • The Château de Villebois-Lavalette on the heights which offers sublime panoramas,
  • The Château de Barbezieux in the south of Charente, a former medieval fortress from the 11th century,
  • The Château de la Mercerie called “the little Versailles of the Charentes”.

Other castles can be discovered in Charente, sometimes during a walk or bike ride. Keep your eyes peeled!
